Professional information

Scientific publications . . . .

Publication topics have included stock assessment methods and methods for fishery reference points, statistical analysis of fishery and ecological data, and topics in fishery management.  [Publications page]

Fishery science software . . . .

[ASPIC 7.0 is now available.] I am the author of several widely used fisheries programs since 1984.  ASPIC, a program to fit surplus-production models, can be downloaded from this Web site.  [ASPIC page]

Awards . . . .

  • Outstanding Publication in Fishery Bulletin. Awarded in 1994 by NOAA for my paper, “A suite of extensions to a nonequilibrium surplus-production model.”
  • NOAA Administrator’s Award. Presented 2003 “for significantly increasing public confidence in NOAA’s assessments of population status for specific marine fisheries in the southeastern United States.”
  • Oscar Elton Sette Award. Given in 2010 by the Marine Fisheries Section of the American Fisheries Society to an “outstanding marine fishery biologist ... for excellence in marine fishery biology through research, teaching, administration, or a combination of the three.”
  • NOAA Distinguished Career Award. Presented in 2011 “for twenty years of cutting edge analytical techniques to evaluate fisheries populations as the basis for scientifically rigorous stock assessments.”
